Your Physio Pilates Questions Answered

What is the difference between mat and reformer Pilates?

Mat Pilates uses your own bodyweight on a mat in an effort to build core stability, strength, and flexibility. Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a sliding carriage and resistance springs to add variety and support.

Reformer Pilates is generally a fitness-based class using reformer machines, often in larger group settings where participants follow the same exercises led by an instructor or screen. It can be a great option for general fitness if you do not have specific pain, injury, or rehabilitation needs.

Clinical Pilates is more personalised and is usually led by a physiotherapist in a smaller group setting. At Therapia Sports & Spine, Clinical Pilates classes are limited to a maximum of five people, allowing your program to be tailored to your injury history, current movement, strength, flexibility, fitness level, and recovery goals. Your program may include a range of Pilates equipment such as the reformer, multi-chair, trapeze table, ladder barrel, spine corrector, and mat-based exercises.

Core stability is a focus, but Clinical Pilates goes much further. It may also help improve postural alignment, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, reduce pain, and build flexibility, both internally and externally.

Not at all. Classes are designed to meet you where you are, whether you’re new to exercise, returning after injury, or simply looking to feel stronger and more confident day to day.

We schedule regular check-ins at three to four weeks and again at eight to 10 weeks to assess your progress and update your program accordingly.

If your preferred class is full, simply join the waitlist, and we’ll email you as soon as a space becomes available.
