Understanding the Different Types of Neck Headaches

In this post, we will explore a range of neck pain and neck-related headache treatments available at Therapia to address these common conditions.

Neck Related Headaches:

Neck headaches, also known as cervicogenic headaches, are caused by issues in the cervical spine (neck). Though the pain is felt in the head, it can actually originate from the upper neck. The neck consists of seven vertebrae stacked upon each other, with small discs in between and facet joints on both sides. Nerves exit between the vertebrae, with the upper three nerves supplying the head and the lower four nerves supplying the shoulder blade and upper limb. Muscles such as the upper trapezius, levator scapula, and scalene can also contribute to neck pain and headaches.

Comprehensive Treatment Approach:

At Therapia physiotherapy, our highly-trained professionals take a comprehensive approach to treating headaches. We believe in evaluating and addressing the root causes rather than merely alleviating symptoms.

Physiotherapy for Headache and Migraine Relief:

Physiotherapy plays a significant role in alleviating headaches. Our experienced physiotherapists utilize evidence-based treatment techniques to provide effective pain relief and improve overall well-being.

Personalised Training and Exercise Programs:

In addition to physiotherapy, Therapia offers personalised training and exercise programs to address headaches.

These programs focus on strengthening specific muscle groups, improving flexibility, and promoting overall body alignment.

Remedial Massage and Dry Needling:

For individuals experiencing muscle tension and trigger points contributing to headaches and migraines, our remedial massage and dry-needling services can provide effective relief.

Remedial massage targets specific areas of tension, promoting relaxation and releasing tight muscles. Dry needling involves the insertion of thin needles into trigger points, releasing muscular knots and improving blood flow.

One-Sided Neck Pain:

One-sided neck pain is characterised by discomfort or tension on one side of the neck. Poor ergonomic conditions, repetitive movements, and stress can also contribute to one-sided neck pain. Seeking professional evaluation and treatment is important to identify the underlying cause and develop an appropriate management plan.

Acute Wry Neck – A Real Pain in the Neck:

Acute wry neck, commonly known as torticollis, refers to the sudden onset of severe neck pain and stiffness, causing the head to tilt to one side. It can be accompanied by muscle spasms and limited range of motion. Acute wry neck can be caused by muscle strain, facet joint irritation, disc herniation, or postural factors. Treatment may involve a combination of gentle exercises, heat or cold therapy, pain medication, and physiotherapy interventions to alleviate pain and restore normal neck function.

What is Cervical Radiculopathy or Nerve Pinched in the Neck and How To Treat It?

Cervical radiculopathy, also known as a pinched nerve in the neck, is a condition characterised by the compression or irritation of a nerve root in the cervical spine (neck). This compression can result from various factors such as herniated discs, degenerative changes, bone spurs, or spinal stenosis.

Causes and Symptoms:

The most common cause of cervical radiculopathy is a herniated disc, which occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc protrudes through its outer layer and compresses a nearby nerve root. Other causes include degenerative changes in the cervical spine, such as osteoarthritis or disc degeneration, which can lead to the narrowing of the spinal canal and pinching of the nerves.

The symptoms of cervical radiculopathy vary depending on the specific nerve root affected but often include:

  • Neck pain that radiates to the shoulder, arm, or hand on one side.
  • Tingling or numbness in the affected arm or hand.
  • Weakness or difficulty in gripping objects.
  • Electric shock-like sensations down the arm.

Treatment Options:

The treatment approach for cervical radiculopathy aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. The following treatment options may be recommended:

Conservative Management:

Most cases of cervical radiculopathy can be managed conservatively without the need for surgery. Conservative treatment options include:

  • Rest: Avoid activities that worsen symptoms and allow the neck to heal.
  • Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises and stretches can improve strength, flexibility, and posture. Physical therapy may also include modalities like heat or cold therapy, electrical stimulation, or ultrasound.
  • Pain Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, or analgesics may be prescribed to manage pain and reduce inflammation.
  • Steroid Injections: Corticosteroid injections into the affected area can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary pain relief.

Lifestyle Modifications:

Making certain lifestyle changes can help alleviate symptoms and prevent further aggravation, such as maintaining good posture, using ergonomic supports, and avoiding activities that strain the neck.

Surgical Intervention:

In severe cases where conservative treatments have not provided sufficient relief, surgery may be considered. Surgical options include removing the herniated disc or widening the spinal canal to decompress the nerve root. It is important to consult with a spine specialist to determine the need for surgery and discuss the potential risks and benefits.

Physiotherapists often play a very important role in preparing the person who may undergo a neck surgery. This is often achieved by improving the flexibility and stability in the neck specifically and working on the overall strength and stability of the spine, upper body in general.
