Rehab for Osteoarthritis is a program based on the most up to date and comprehensive research on using active rehabilitation to treat Osteoarthritis symptoms.

That is to say, we have incorporated the ability for each individual to extend themselves with this program and achieve their own personal exercise goals…

How Does The Program Work?

You will first need an Initial Assessment with one of our physios to understand your history and complete some baseline functional assessments that can be used to monitor your progress.

Following this you will have an Individual Exercise Session to customise the exercise program to suit your individual needs and then you can attend one of our Clinical Exercise Classes. Ideally you would attend 12 of these classes over 6 weeks. The sessions are run by our physios who have had training in the Rehab program. Our physios will take you through your exercises, monitor your progress, and make changes to these as you progress through the program.

It is suggested to have a follow up review session after 3 months to assess how well you have progressed and more importantly what you will need going forward to continue to build your strength and stability!

Class Options:

Multiple Classes are conducted every week and with more than 20 classes every week you should be able to find at least 2 times that suit you!

Can I Participate in Rehab Plus for OA?

Rehab for OA is a program for all individuals who experience any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity. You may participate in the program if you have hip or knee joint problems that resulted in visiting a health care provider.

Note that you do not need a GP referral to join the Rehab Plus Program, but if deemed appropriate by your GP you may be eligible for a rebate from Medicare.

You may not be able to participate in the Rehab for OA Program if:

There are other reasons for your hip and/or knee pain, including; tumor, inflammatory joint disease, result of hip fracture, soft tissue or connective tissue problems

OR

You have other symptoms that are more pronounced than the osteoarthritis problems (for example chronic generalized pain or fibromyalgia)

HOWEVER

We still recommend seeing one of our physios even if Rehab for OA doesn’t suit you as we can make an individualised program to help you on the path to recovery.

Step-Up (Rehab Plus) Exercises Performed By Mukul Singla (Therapia Physiotherapist):

How will it help me?

The most up to date studies on OA treatment have shown that active rehabilitation programs like Rehab help people with mild, moderate and severe osteoarthritis reduce their pain levels, and improve their mobility and quality of life. The program is designed for over 40 year olds who have Osteoarthritis and have not had a knee replacement.

Research studies of similar programs have shown a significant improvement (32%) in reducing pain and improving functional ability for those suffering from osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. They also found participants were able to reduce their intake of pain medication and in many cases delay or avoid having a hip or knee replacement altogether.

Education Workshops

Research has shown patient education regarding OA can significantly improve patient outcomes. To help raise awareness in the community, we have hosted FREE ONLINE education workshops as part of the Rehab for OA Awareness Program. These education sessions are a way of increasing awareness among the health community about OA, and allowing those that experience these symptoms to understand what we can do to help them.

These sessions covered:

  • Understanding of Osteoarthritis as a whole joint problem
  • Discuss ‘how the Right loading can help the joint function’
  • How & Why exercises (Rehab exercises in particular) are helpful with OA

If you are interested in watching an online education workshop we are happy to send a link of the video through to you.
