Your Physio Pilates Questions Answered

What is the difference between reformer and mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates utilises your own body weight on a mat with the aim of building core stability, strength, and flexibility. Reformer Pilates incorporates a machine with a sliding carriage and resistance springs to introduce variety and support.

Reformer Pilates is generally a fitness-focused class conducted using reformer machines, often in larger group settings where all participants follow the same exercises guided by an instructor or screen. It may be a good option for general fitness if you do not have specific pain, injury, or rehabilitation needs.

Clinical Pilates offers a more personalised experience and is usually guided by a physiotherapist in a smaller group setting. At Therapia Sports & Spine, Clinical Pilates classes are kept to a maximum of five people, so your program can be tailored to your injury history, current movement, strength, flexibility, fitness level, and recovery goals. Your program may include a variety of Pilates equipment such as the reformer, multi-chair, trapeze table, ladder barrel, spine corrector, and mat-based exercises.

Core stability plays an important role, but Clinical Pilates covers much more ground. It may also help improve postural alignment, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, assist in reducing pain, and build flexibility, both internally and externally.
Not at all. Classes are tailored to meet you where you are, whether you’re new to exercise, returning after injury, or simply looking to feel stronger and more comfortable day to day.
We plan regular check-ins at three to four weeks and again at eight to 10 weeks to evaluate your progress and adjust your program accordingly.
If your preferred class is full, simply join the waitlist, and we’ll email you as soon as a space becomes available.
