Your Physio Pilates Questions Answered

What is the difference between mat and reformer Pilates?

Mat Pilates uses your own body weight on a mat in an effort to build core stability, strength, and flexibility. Reformer Pilates uses a machine with a sliding carriage and resistance springs to add variety and support.

Reformer Pilates is commonly a fitness-based class that makes use of reformer machines, often delivered in larger group settings where participants follow the same exercises led by an instructor or screen. It may suit those looking for general fitness support without specific pain, injury, or rehabilitation needs.

Clinical Pilates is more personalised and is usually led by a physiotherapist in a smaller group setting. At Therapia Sports & Spine, Clinical Pilates classes are limited to a maximum of five people, allowing your program to be tailored to your injury history, current movement, strength, flexibility, fitness level, and recovery goals. Your program may include a range of Pilates equipment such as the reformer, multi-chair, trapeze table, ladder barrel, spine corrector, and mat-based exercises.

While core stability is an important focus, Clinical Pilates goes much further. It may also help support postural alignment, strengthen pelvic floor muscles, help reduce pain, and build flexibility, both internally and externally.
Not at all. Our classes are designed to accommodate you wherever you are in your fitness journey, whether you’re new to exercise, returning after injury, or simply looking to move with greater strength and confidence day to day.
Regular check-ins are scheduled at three to four weeks and again at eight to 10 weeks to assess your progress and make any necessary updates to your program.
If the class you’d like is full, join the waitlist and we’ll send you an email as soon as a place becomes available.
