Arthritis Treatment with Exercises
Effective treatment for osteoarthritis of knees, hips, neck or back with exercises
Arthritis affects at least 1 in 11 Australians which is more than 2.1 million people. If you experience joint stiffness, pain and difficulty with day-to-day tasks due to osteoarthritis, you are not alone!
Broadly speaking, Arthritis is a wearing of the cartilage to the point where bone spurs, called osteophytes, begin to form in gaps of cartilage. This creates inflammation – pain and stiffness in the joint(s) affected. Arthritis most commonly occurs in load-bearing joints – Knees, hips, the lower back and neck in particular.
Comprehensive research has demonstrated that active rehabilitation, which includes progressive core and limb (hips, knees) strengthening, balance and proprioception training and weight bearing exercises is effective in managing the symptoms associated with arthritis.
The physiotherapist-led clinical exercises at our Physio clinic (situated near the New Calvary Adelaide Hospital and St. Andrew’s Hospital in Adelaide CBD) are ideal for helping to treat the symptoms associated with arthritis. The individually tailored program our physiotherapists prescribe allows for long-term grading (conditioning) of muscles and joints which can help combat the troubles faced by those with arthritis. Running through this program under the constant supervision of our physios allows for regular adjustment and personalisation based on everyone’s individual presentation and needs.
